An 11kV distribution transformer steps a medium-voltage 11kV supply down to the low voltage used by homes, commercial buildings, industrial plants and local distribution networks. The transformer is the core equipment; it can be supplied on its own or integrated with medium-voltage switchgear and low-voltage distribution equipment inside a packaged substation.
The 11 kV class covers most urban and rural distribution networks in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, which is why it is the first range we publish prices for. Single unit or container load, the unit is the same: sealed corrugated tank, cold-rolled silicon steel core, full copper windings.
The three secondary voltages exist because different countries standardise differently — 400 V in most of Africa, 415 V in the UK-influenced grids, 433 V in parts of the Middle East. We build all three on the same platform, so the price does not change with the secondary voltage.
An 11kV/415V secondary substation takes an 11kV primary supply and distributes power at 415V. The most suitable scope depends on what is already installed at the site.
Choose a standalone 11/0.415 kV distribution transformer when the HV switchgear, LV panel, protection and installation room are already designed or supplied by others.
Typical rating: 50–2500 kVA. Full copper winding and routine test records are standard.
Choose a European type packaged substation when the HV switchgear, transformer, LV distribution and protection need to arrive prewired, coordinated and tested in one outdoor enclosure.
Typical rating: 400–1250 kVA, with different compartment and cable-entry arrangements available.
For accurate selection, confirm whether the 415V network is three-phase four-wire, the required transformer vector group, LV fault rating and whether the local utility requires a ring-main unit.
| Parameter | Range |
|---|---|
| Rated capacity | 50 – 2500 kVA |
| Primary voltage | 11 kV |
| Secondary voltage | 0.4 kV, 0.415 kV or 0.433 kV |
| Series | S11, three-phase, oil-immersed |
| Winding | Full copper |
| Vector group | Dyn11 (others on request) |
| Frequency | 50 Hz (60 Hz on request) |
| Cooling | ONAN; ONAF on request |
| Tank | Corrugated sealed tank, anti-corrosion finish |
| Tests | Routine test on every unit, record supplied |
Start with the calculated maximum demand, power factor and expected daily load profile. Then confirm the utility or project standard, because some networks fix the transformer size for a feeder regardless of the connected load.
| Typical rating | Common duty | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| 50–100 kVA | Small rural or commercial distribution point | Single-phase load share, voltage-drop limit and pole/platform arrangement |
| 160–250 kVA | Village network, residential block or small plant | Maximum demand, future load and allowed loading above nameplate rating |
| 315–630 kVA | Urban distribution, workshops and medium commercial buildings | Fault level, LV switchgear rating and available installation space |
| 800–1250 kVA | Industrial plants, larger buildings and network reinforcement | Cooling method, parallel operation, cable entry and transport limits |
| 1600–2500 kVA | Heavy industrial or high-capacity distribution points | Site conditions, loss evaluation, protection scheme and delivery route |
The table is an application guide, not a substitute for the project load calculation. Add spare capacity deliberately and follow the utility’s approved transformer schedule and loss limits.
For the local medium-voltage distribution step in networks standardised at 11 kV. It is commonly used close to residential, commercial and light-industrial loads where the utility already operates an 11 kV feeder.
Where the local utility, industrial network or renewable project uses 33 kV for heavier or longer circuits. Voltage class is a system decision; do not select it only because a lower-current transformer appears smaller.
For an outdoor installation without a transformer building, compare a European type packaged substation with an HV room, transformer room and LV room delivered as one coordinated unit.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is an 11kV/415V secondary substation? | It is an 11kV-to-415V distribution point. It can be a transformer supplied on its own, or a complete packaged substation including HV switchgear, transformer, LV panel and protection. |
| Can you supply 11/0.415 kV instead of 11/0.4? | Yes, at the same price. We build 0.4, 0.415 and 0.433 kV secondary on the same platform. |
| Is 60 Hz available? | Yes, on request. Tell us the destination country and we will confirm the design. |
| Copper or aluminium windings? | Full copper as standard. Aluminium is available on request at a lower price. |
| Do you supply the type test report? | Type test and energy efficiency reports are available for the series on request. Every unit also gets a routine test record. |
| What is the lead time for a container? | 30–45 days after deposit. We issue the loading plan before the container is stuffed. |
| What should I include in the RFQ? | Send the rating list, primary and secondary voltages, frequency, quantity, installation environment, destination port and any required standards or drawings. |
Need a different voltage class? See 33 kV distribution transformers, a packaged secondary substation, or custom builds to your drawing.
Tell us the capacities, quantities and destination port. We will confirm the copper price and issue a quotation the same day.
